Soil Testing and Analysis
Soil testing can determine the pH, nutrient and organic matter levels as well as existence of toxic elements. The Natural Resources Conservation Services (NRCS) provides soil maps that can tell soil type, pH, drainage, fertility, profile, setting and many other useful things about a given area.The look and feel of soil can also provide a good indication of soil’s structure and health.
Existing Plant Identification
I can help you identify what is growing on your property. Whether its native, non native, or invasive, a forb, grass, sedge, shrub or tree as well as what volunteer plants say about your garden.
Plant Recommendations and Orders
I can help you choose plants based on the conditions and location of your garden as well as your tastes, interests and needs. I can also supply you with seeds and native plants local to the DC area.

Small Tree and Shrub Protection
We live in an area filled with hungry herbivores who especially love a habitat garden. Deer, rabbits, groundhogs and shrews can damage young growth. But this can be prevented with various types of temporary fencing until plants are established enough to fend for themselves.
Cardboard Collection
An easy way to make a garden bed on turf is to cover it with mulch covered cardboard for a period of time. I can assist in cardboard collection if necessary.
Weeding
I approach weeding from a priority standpoint. Some weeds are much more problematic than others and most need to be dealt with according to individual growth and reproduction patterns. I’m also careful to protect young plants while looking out for desired plant volunteers. In addition, animals, such as insects, birds and rabbits need protection especially if nesting.
